MSP COACH VS. FRACTIONAL OPERATOR: YOU'RE PROBABLY BUYING THE WRONG ONE
"I've been burned by coaches." I hear some version of this from almost every owner who calls me for the first time. They paid for a year of coaching, got a stack of frameworks and a weekly call, and walked away with the same problems they started with.
Schedule a CallHere's why that happens, and how to tell the difference before you sign another contract.
WHAT A COACH ACTUALLY SELLS YOU
A coach asks questions. Good coaches ask good questions. But a question is not an answer, and most MSP owners who hire a coach are not looking for someone to help them think out loud. They are looking for someone to tell them what to do, and then help them do it.
Coaching works well when the owner already knows the right move and just needs accountability to make it. It works badly when the owner does not know what the right move is, because a coach is not required to have run the thing they are coaching you on.
WHAT A FRACTIONAL OPERATOR ACTUALLY SELLS YOU
An operator has run service delivery, made payroll, fixed dispatch chaos, and fired a tech who would not change. The advice is not theoretical because the person giving it has already paid the price for getting it wrong somewhere else.
That difference matters most in the moments coaching breaks down. When the fix requires a hard conversation with a client, a structural change to how the team works, or a decision that costs real money, you want someone who has made that exact call before, not someone walking you through a framework for the first time alongside you.
THE QUESTION THAT TELLS YOU WHICH ONE YOU'RE HIRING
Ask directly: "Have you run an MSP, in an operating role, with real accountability for the outcome?"
A coach can be honest and say no, and still be useful for the right situation. An operator says yes, and that yes is the entire value of the engagement.
THE PRACTICAL MOVE
If you've been burned before, the problem usually was not coaching itself. It was hiring a coach for a job that needed an operator. Before you sign anything else, get clear on which one you actually need.
